Welcome to the African Orchids Portal - introduction by Isobyl la Croix :
Africa has fewer species of orchids than South America and Asia, and in general they are not so brightly coloured, but they have an appeal all of their own. The best known and most widely grown genera are Aerangis and Angraecum, which occur both on mainland Africa and Madagascar, but there are many other angraecoid genera that are well worth growing, including among others Eurychone, Plectrelminthus and Diaphananthe from mainland Africa and Cryptopus, Oeonia and Oeoniella from Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands. Of course there are also many other interesting orchids that are not “angraecoids”, such as Ancistrochilus, Bulbophyllum species and polystachas. The last of these should be much more widely grown, most are easily cultivated, compact and come in a range of colours, and many are scented. Enjoy ! Isobyl
